I have heard about it, I've seen pics and videos, but I've never seen this phenomenom live before.
Today about 1/3 into the show, one of the solo jets made a 50 foot pass in front of the piers that are closest to show center where I like to watch from and I saw this sonic wave as the F18 passed in front of us. It was over before it even got close to Pier 39, so they wouldn't have seen it down there, but this would indicate the jet was flying at or just above the speed of sound (about 720-750MPH) and the humidity was right to cause this condensing ring effect.
I didn't get a pic, but I found one on the Internet to share with everyone... the speed was amazing...:applause:
It was too cool...:hail:
Here's the techincal explanation of the phenomenom... http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/s/soundbarrier.htm
By the way, the sonic boom effect was muffled due to the proximity to the water...but it was audible. I've seen supersonic only on Sundays at airshows...when the guys push the envelope a little bit and usually when they are leaving...this was not a standard speed manuever for the Angels....they normally stay subsonic, but get as close as they can on this sneak pass.
