View Full Version : Let's ride the Dragon Saturday Oct 27...

I would like to get this ride in before it's too late as winter is starting to show itself early this year.
I have to slab over there before the fun stuff can begin, so I'll either come up on Friday and stay the night somewhere, or come up very early on Saturday to the meeting place.
I would ask that Kahuna suggest the meeting place, time and the route as he is more familiar with that area than I am. There are many great roads in excellent condition up there and I look forward to riding the dragon again.
I'd like to start maybe around 10AM, ride for a couple of hours, stop at a great food joint, and then ride for another couple of hours before calling it a day and slabbing back home.
Post up here if you're game...RR

It's one week to our Saturday ride on the Lil' Dragon and the forecast looks good so far, but I think we need to plan the time and exact location soon so that there is no chance of anyone missing out.
I saw some attempts to pick a time and location, but it's not crystal clear to me. I'm still thinking 10AM is a good time to start the ride....yes?
Also, I will likely be staying in the area that we meet, so some cheap motel suggestions would be nice...say within 10 miles of the meeting location.
Someone should plan the route...and I think Kahuna already volunteered...so posting a map of the route would be great, or at least a written route.
The lunch spot should also be planned in advance, so we don't end up chasing ourselves in circles trying to find a place.
I'm lookin' forward to ridin' with you guys again...see you the 27th.

You guy coming up from northern Cali, can come up 4 (Stockton) to 49, or maybe 120 (Manteca) to 49, or ever 132 (Modesto) right to culterville. We could meet there.
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&rls=com.microsoft:*&resnum=0&q=coulterville,+ca&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl
You guys can leave from your area any time you want, just let me know so I can make sure I'm in Culterville when you get there. If you let me know what route you will be taking, I could always head that way and meet you along the way.
If you will be coming up from Jamestown or Chinese Camp I believe, I would top off there. If you're coming up there is gas along the way, I would fill up there. No gas on either side of the Little Dragon. We could run the dragon a few times and then maybe head up New Priest Grade to Groveland. Gas up and then head back down Greeley Hill. There is food and drink in Culterville and a great place to eat in Mariposa. Mariposa is about 11 miles away from the top of the Dragon, so we can always head there for some good food. There are a few different choices, we can decide what everyone wants to do as we are riding. :)
I would through a few bottles of water in your bag, or make sure you fill up your Camel Back, there are no services at the top of the Little Dragon. I'm trying to get the gang from Repsol Store up there with some drinks and shade, but they will probably be working all day. :( We'll have to wait and see. :)

Thanks William,
The weather looks great...the ride sounds fantastic...thanks for posting the meet spot again...I have to admit I must be blind. I'm going to shoot for a 10AM arrival at the meet point. Is Coulterville that wide spot in the road with the train on the side of the road?
Once I know the route the other boys are taking I'm going to try and rendevouz with them along their route before that.
Looking forward to a great day...RR

As for ride style, each has their own. It's an awesome rode that you'll want to run fast, but it's a good idea to take it slow for the day. We don't want any bent bikes now do we.
Other non Repsol riders you say? Sure, everyone is welcome. I've invited some riders for our local forum as well as a few of my buddies.

Like Hoon said...ride your own ride...even when in a group...don't be tempted to keep up, because the dragon will bite...HARD. I will start slow to re-orient to the road, and then I will be quite fast by the third run, but I never pass in curves, I don't ride close to other riders in the group on twisties and I don't drag knee.
Don't wimp out Tony...get your butt up there and leave when you are ready. If we start at 10 in Coulterville, lunch at 12-1, ride 'til 2-3...you're home by 3-4...
Ride as slow as you want...you won't be judged on speed...but I cannot imagine why you wouldn't want to wear full leathers on a twisty mountain road with dramatic drop offs... I will be fully suited up and I hope everyone else will be too.
See you there...RR

I'd love to meet up with you guys if you are going to rendevouz somewhere on the way up. Whatever spot you would propose meeting Tony I could also meet at...but it has to be very specific in time and location. Just pick a spot that gets us to Coulterville by 10...and leaves a 15 minute meet window at the rendevouz spot...Starbucks are always good...or other easy landmark from the freeway... or meet in Oakdale somewhere at 9:15-9:30ish...like Jack in the Box.
If you guys are coming up via 49 or something in the hills, then I'll just see you in Coulterville.
If any of us doesn't make the rendevouz by the deadline...whoever is there takes off and assumes the others either bailed or went directly to Coulterville.
You guys can call Tony and figure out if he's coming or not...but either way if you want to meet...let me know.
Cheers...RR

Don't forget to call Tony since he's saying his computer is dying... but meeting in Tracy would have you back-tracking a bit, causing an even earlier start for you...but I'll leave that decision up to you.
Frankly I don't think Tony wants his arm twisted to come on this ride...the old man has to catch a plane the next day and needs his beauty sleep...:D
I'd be willing to bet dollars to doughnuts that it will be just you, me and Will...plus Will's buddies, but I'll ride if nobody shows up.

Yeah, it is what it is, I never like having to twist someone's arm to go out riding. You either want to ride or you don't. Me, I want to ride every chance I get and if that includes meeting up with some good buddies, then all the better. I've got plenty of time in the winter months to get to my chores around the house. When good weather presents itself, we must take advantage of it whenever possible.
Thankfully I have a wife that understands this and allows me these times to spend doing something that I love. Knowing quite well that I will be in a much better place when I return home to her. :) I'm sure when the new baby arrives I'll be riding a bit less on the weekends, but I know that when the opportunity presents itself again, I'll be ready to go. :)

Typically I would grab 120 off the 99...up through Oakdale to 49, then south to Coulterville.
There is a Jack in the Box in Oakdale right after you make the left on 120 downtown about 2 blocks up on the left... we could meet there about 9:15 to make it to Coulterville by 10 if my calculations are correct...

Yeah, Oakdale to Culteville is well under 45 minutes if you keep a normal "sportbike" pace. ;) The stretch from Hwy 120 to Culterville on Hwy 49 is actually pretty cool, it would be a nice appetizer before riding the Little Dragon.

Didn't take too many pics, but here's what I got.
For those of us that don't know... how 'out a run down of who's who in the first or third pic?
Glad you guys had a good time... I'm jealous. North Texas roads suck!

Nobody tell... I am going to have a mini contest and giveaway. You have to guess all 4 Repsol owners in the group of 6 and identify them by Repsol Forum handle.
The winner will get a giant Repsol flag like those that flew over the Repsol Hospitality tent this year at the Laguna MotoGP.
Obviously the 4 of us there are not eligible...and I am the judge for this contest... I will pick one of the pics and post the contest in a separate thread. It will start tomorrow and the first one to PM me the 4 names in the left to right order in the picture will win...and remember you will need to identify the position among the 6 of us in the pic.
I won't accept any answers until Nov 1 at 6PM Pacific time...I'll post the thread later...so you don't know yet which pic I will use.

Only a lot...!!!!
I have to tell you one of the places I have to see before I die is Australia. I love the beach...the water, boats, fishing...bikinis...everything you have an excess of down there.
Of course our Florida isn't much different, but the people are so much friendlier in Australia...or so I hear.
I'll look for your advice when the time comes for a trip down under...RR
