View Full Version : Proper engine idle RPM?

I would just like to say, I am a newbie, so be gentle.
It seems as though my idle rpm is a bit high. It idles at 1500. However, the only thing I have to compare it to is my husband's FZ1 which idles around 700. I hate his idle setting because I can't hear the bike running but it seems that my 07 Repsol is too high. What is a good idle rpm?
Anyone? Anyone?
Thanks,
Carolyn

Should be between 1100 - 1300 RPM warm in netural. This may help too...

IS THIS A NEW BIKE?? look at your manual....it should be between 1100-1300rpm.
my bike runs/idles at 1400rpm.
if your bike idles higher than 1500rpm....you can adjust it, from the left side of your bike, underneat the tank. there is a black knob, you can not miss it....you need to use a philips screw driver. make sure you have your bike running for 10 minutes or so once your bikes is about 180dg temps. just to make sure it is not cold.

Mine idles at a perfect 1150...and the black knob doesn't require a screwdriver on my '05...just adjust as necessary by hand anytime.
I adjust it to a high idle of about 2000-2500 on the racetrack to make downshifts easier...

I heard that before. Does setting your idle high like that on track days effect blipping while downshifting? Do you even need to throttle it while you downshift?

No you dont. Just turn the knob. If you use a screwdriver you will take the knob off the cable
you are turning, and that wouldnt be good. Dont unscrew it too far either. I did that on my old F4i,
what a pain in the a$$ to put back in. Just make small adjustments and you should be fine.;)

Thanks for the advice.
The bike is a 2007. I will adjust it down with the knob. It starts at 2000rpm and then settles to 1500 once it is warmed up. I like the idea of it idling lower but did not want to go too low.
Thanks, you guys rock!

Make sure the bike is completely "warmed up" before you adjust the idle.
As you've noticed, the bike idles high while it's cold. Adjust the idle during this time and it will be way low once it warms up and settles to the regular idle.
Mine was idling around 1800 rpm - I left work, let it get good and warm, and reached down with my left hand to adjust it at red lights on the way home. Got it right where I want it now.
