View Full Version : Low sided 07 yesterday

Got bad news. I low sided my brand new bike yesterday. I wasn't as mad as I thought I would be but it is definitely not good.

What is ironic is I was going to work early because I had to attend a Coast Guard Motorcycle Safety Meeting. Apparently the Coast Guard is having too many motorcycle fatalities and serious injuries.

$700 bucks worth of damage. All my parts come in on Wednesday. At least I get to work on my bike.

I was coming out of my neighborhood from a full stop and was making a right turn onto the highway. The road was slightly damp just because it was morning and it was about 40 degrees. Made the turn like normal and the next thing I know I am laying on the ground. I jumped up to keep the car behind me from running me over. Wow that back tire just slid right out like it was on ice. I checked the road and didn't see anything. I am wondering if I added too much throttle when I took off. I don't really remember adding anymore throttle than I usually do. The worst thing is that I can't ride until I get it fixed and my husband just got a brand new Ducati Multistrada today.:(

This sucks,

Carolyn

Sorry to hear about the getoff. Not sure if you are interested but these guys will help if something like this happens again. They are case covers made by Moto-R. I've seen plenty of bikes crack the cover and/or engine cases over a small spill. Saw one about a month ago that needed a complete engine case swap over dropping it in the garage and the fall causing the engine case to break. As you can see I also have frame sliders but don't trust them solely as I have also seen those snap right at the mount.

Good luck and heal quick!!!

Sorry to hear about that. Damage looks minimal though. Glad to see you werent hurt too bad.

Hope you and your bike both have a speedy recovery. :)

*Side note* Diel, where do you get those covers and hoses. Ive looked all over the net and cant find a US

supplier for those hoses. Thanks in advance. ;)

The hoses are a combination of Samco and SFS Performance. I got them and the side covers from Superbike Supply. The hose kit is about $225 and then you need to get clamps also, the side covers were $85 and $75 if I remember right. The alloy pipe is custom made. The Samco kit will include all the hoses in the cooling system.

Your unfortunate incident is all too common. We tend to replay the same habits even when conditions change...we're creatures of habit.

There are corners that appear exactly as they do in dry weather, but the little bit of surface oils will render that patch of road as if it were ice. If there's moisture, that can be invisible danger...made worse in the cold.

I see that your elbow took quite a hit...were you wearing leathers? Imagine if you went down at a higher speed...your injuries would have been much worse...glad you are okay.

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes. I was really lucky.

I just finished taking off all my scraped up parts. I sure do love working on my bike, I just hate looking at the rash.

Hey Repsoul, thanks for the offer it is good to hear from a fellow Coastie.

I will definitely take a look at the after market engine covers.

I think I learned a lesson about riding in the morning, probably will take it a little slower.

I was wearing a brand new (literally the night before) one piece olympia all-weather riding suit. It was my test ride and I was eager to see how it worked in the cold. It did get a small hole in the elbow, it was right next to the armor. I think next time I will cinch up the strap that goes around the forearm, which will probably keep the armor more in place. The suit and the armor are excellent quality, I just hit to the side of the armor.

Thanks again, and if anyone has any advice on replacing the right side engine cover, I will take it.

The road was slightly damp just.....Made the turn like normal

Hate to hear that you went down Carolyn, but at least you came away with minor injuries, minimal bike carnage, and good spirits.

The quote above quite probably spells out your problem. Damp roads and 1000cc motorcycles aren't the perfect combination. My brother recently did the exact same thing on his Shadow... too much throttle in a (very) low speed sharp turn. Chalk it up to a lesson learned.

first a comment, I'm really glad your ok considering how the military is very cautious when it comes to there members riding bikes anyways because there are so many of us who don't use good judgment when it comes to education and restraint. with that being said...I've never seen a real Repsol with a black frame/swingarm before, if I may ask since I live close to you, where you purchased it?

Thats cause its not. It just looks black. If you look close you can tell its silver. If it was the

07 black it would be a matte, not shiny like it is.

sorry to hear about your bike. and glad that you are okay. we are all humans and we are not perfect. one thing to remember, in the winter, tires are harder and more slippery. if your tires were not warm....and the weather very cold outside.....40 degrees outside.....the cold and the moisture tend to bring up the oils fron the ground up. so it gets very slippery.

so all of you out there....dont understimate the weather....if it is about 45 or lower....be careful out there.

this morning i was going to work on my pick up truck....out of nowhere, a big semi truck almost hit me.....as i saw the truck changing lanes, driver sort of sleep.....i accelarated, getting out of the way, and the semi truck hit a honda civic....the car behind me.....the truck hit the small car, taking out of the freeway, flipping the car two three times. as I saw that, i pulled over got off my truck and called the cops and ambulance. the car/honda threw the driver off the car....not sure how. but the driver was laying on the road....man !!!! it was bad. all this happened here in Stockton.....on french camp road and the I-5.
