charging the battery

My battery was dead yesterday so this morning I put it on my charger for a couple of hours while I went to work on my R2D2, when I got back the was a smell coming from the battery and a high pitched humming noise. I think I over charged it, I thought I would have to leave it over night to do that. Anyway is it still alright to put back in the bike or should I get a new one?

Any help would be appreciated.

Batteries are not designed to make sound so that can't be good:D
The smell (rot egs) is normal during charging you can also hear gas bubbles (caution this gas is higly explosive)
Can you give more info?
Age, how did it get empty, long time no use, was it complely dead ect.

it's the battery I got with the bike so a little over a year. I sprained my ankle so couldn't ride and I guess between the lo jack and the alarm it drained the battery. I tried jump starting it from my car but wouldn't keep the charge. The smell was like rotting eggs so that's not too bad, the sound could have been the gas as you mentioned. It got very hot when I charged it but I think that could be normal. Just not sure if I should put it back in the bike.

Putting it back won't harm the bike, it work, don't work or work poor.
1e: don't start charge with to many amps on a compleet empty bat. this will damage your battery (a rule is when it is decharged slow, charge it slow. When it decharge quick, you can charge it quick)
2e: never let get your battery compleet empty (the plates will curve to each other and create shotcut)
3e:When you have longtime no use, charge and uncharge (as low as possible) the battery, even better go for a ultimate charger (they maintain the battery)
Getting the battery compleet empty can/will kill or short the lifetime

this is great information thanks so much. I must have just charged it to quickly. I was just worried in case i put it back in the bike and it either didn't work or shorted something out. So worst case scenario is it doesn't work well and I need to get a new one. At least I can try it. Thanks so much, very helpful.

Right!!
But more important is that you never let go down the voltage to much.
This will damage your bat.
Maintain it is the best solution (see link)

when charging a bike battery you should not exceed 6 amp charge. 2 amps for 8 hours is best. Never jump from your car! you can get a 30 amp+ hit and fry the bike system...or actually blow up the batt cuz it gets a fast build up of gasses that cant escape fast enough (seen it happen)!

I usually have R2 sit on the back and fix anything that breaks if I get attacked by a tie fighter from behind.

Thanks guys really helpful, I never knew your not supposed to charge the battery from the car. I did hook my battery back up today and everything seems fine but wouldn't you know were having a storm here now so I can't ride anyway.

I use the Battery Tender Jr. on my bike. Works well for maintaining charge - don't buy it expecting to solve problems caused by a bad battery though... it's intended to maintain a good battery.

I use the battery tender to maintain my bikes too and haven't had any problems. Still running with the stock batteries in both bikes.

i just replaced my battery also.


it was not taking the charge. i took the battery to the Honda dealer since i was putting new tires to my bike.....they ran a test on the battery...it was no good. bought a new battery and the service dept mounted and installed my tires for free. i did not buy the tires from the dealer....theyhave a very good service dept and crew.
