View Full Version : Cleaning The Rims
Ultimate Repsol

What is everyone cleaning their rims with ? I seem to have a lot of brake dust build up on my repsol, there also seems to be a oily substance on them too. I have been told not to rub on them very much or they will turn yellow. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance.

I use the Honda Polish. Works fantastic on the rims for me.

But Honda polish has specifically been linked to discoloration of the rims. Not sure if it's solely the fault of the Honda Polish, but check around on the web, a lot of guys have took the paint off the rims using that stuff. Also, not sure if it's just an '05 problem or not. I haven't heard any complaints about the rims on the '07, but then they haven't been out long. :)
I use good old fashion soap and water. Works great every time and definitely won't damage the rims. :)

 The oily substance is chain lube it will stop around 400 miles at least mine did and yes even on 07s the paint seems to wanna come off, this is total retardation on the part of Honda, I have used only gentle cleaners and seen orange on the rag now I wish I hadnt bought 4 cans of that Honda spray, but then again it could be anything:eek:

I used plexus and had some yellowish color show up on the white towel, but that was only on the back wheel. I'm pretty sure it was the white lithium grease that Honda likes to coat the chain with before shipping the bikes and not the paint rubbing off.

I wonder is the paint we are seeing on the rags after cleaning is normal (as normal as it can be). Most rims are black, with black brake dust, so we may have been rubbing off black paint on those rims when cleaning. I can't see it being the pigment or chemical makeup of the paint that would cause it to react with cleaners.
I am going to test some other sprays tomorrow when I hit the local bike shop, my rear rims is damn greasy and nasty.

Holy @%^^!!! I just cleaned the wheels on my week-old Repsol for the 1st time yesterday - what a pain! I tried using some Maguires detail spray and it wouldn't take off the brake dust so I used some waterless-cleaner-in-a-can (Turtlewax, I think). I'm going to get some of this Honda stuff that you guys are talking about to see if that works better. Geez...

This is what I use, called Motorcycle Stuff. I got it from the local Suzuki dealer.
http://www.amotostuff.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?store_code=AML&screen=PROD&product_code=365-1001
I used it on my wheels today. Sprayed a little on and wipe, every bit of grease and dust came off in a few wipes, and no orange on the rag what so ever. I have used this spray polish/cleaner for two years because I had a solid black 05 600RR and it kept all superficial scratches to a minimum when cleaning. Works awesome on removing dried bugs from the front of the bike as well.

Yes, the polish even removed boogers that have been there for years.:D
This is the best polish/cleaner I have used yet! Now that I have my Hayden sticker kit installed, I will start using it to clean the entire bike because it cleans and puts down a layer of wax to protect the paint.

Had this same issues with my Repsol. Simply used gasoline on the tip of a towel and all the chain grease comes right off the rim. No rub off.
Than I just clean the rim one last time with soapand water.

hello guys :D i been using WD40 it woks fantasic on colored wheels (ie repsol) i owned 87 kawi ninja 600 with white wheels !! i used then and i use it now on both repsols, it removes chain lube like nothing (word of caution do not spray on to wheels it will get on brake disc  and they will not work as well ) spray on a rag being carefull not to touch disc!!!!!:D

When using WD40, keep in mind that it is a petroleum product and will leave a little residue behind. This residue will attract dust like a magnet. It is like when you spill gas on the side of your car, then it is the first place that dust and dirt with start to build up.
The polish I mentioned takes the chain lube off like it was dust with one wipe. It also leaves a coat of wax behind to make the next cleaning easier. Just my .02

That is surprising that WD40 works so well from keeping the dust off. There must be an additive that repels dust in the product. I will have to keep that in mind.

If you want to save yourself alot of work just clean them good once, windex em off to get cleaner residue off, then wax them with a good carnuba or paste wax. After that the lube wont stick and to maintain a quick wipe with honda polish and they are done.
ps: honda polish is my second most favorite stuff next to duct tape:D

I have got the best solution for you guys. Finally washed the repsol for the first time this weekend, and the back wheel cum was stuck on there bad. Normally I would use Wesleys bleche-white tire cleaner (which is great for tires, pulls th dirt out without scrubbing, also good for carpet stains on the interior, I know I used to detail cars long ago), but after hearing about the orange paint possibly coming off, I said no. I used Rain-X bug & tar gel. Spray it on let it soak and wipe the grime right off, then just rinse. It is clear-coat safe, and NO ORANGE. Left the wheels clean and shiny. By the way, BK, when is Mike getting some CZ wheels back in. I must have them !!!!!!!!:D :D

I use Simple Green Max Metal. I washed my Repsol for the first time yesterday and the Simple Green made cleaning my rims easy, especially the rear one with all the chain grease and brake dust that builds up there. Just spray on, let it set and wipe off. I used the regular Simple Green bottle to clean my M-16 when I was going through USMC bootcamp and it was great. I didn't notice any paint come off the rim but of course, if you don't feel comfortable then please don't use it. Here's the link if you want to read up on it.

I REPEAT NO PJ1 BLACK LABEL
I have used thier other products in the past like the blue one etc.... never had this kind of problem, when they say HEAVY DUTY, damn I mean this is ridiculous :(
The chain was clean and dry before application, I rode a little to warm things up, I wiped excess off. Then I rode for about 2.5 hours onlyto find I now sport a cool black tar rim. I mean just as if I had rode thru a puddle of tar that they use to pave asphalt with :confused2::weirdface:
I have found this stuff on the tail underside, in the heat shielding, along my exhaust, under my plate, all over the hugger, on the rear linkage and shock, in the repsol colors on the tail underside, on the rear sets, the swingarm, inside the space in the swingarm, all over the rear underside even found a few spiderwebbs across the rear tail cowl???????
The stuff is like the stickiest gumm that you ever had to cut out of a young girl's head, like some black licorice laffy taffy mixed wiht melted electrical tape, the stuff wont brake down at all. I am using hot soapy water wiht palmolive ultra concentrated wiht oxy power. You can barley wash this stuff of your hands under running water and yet you have to rub a 2" wide by 4" long basicaly two fingers together on a terry towel for like what seems 25 or 30 passes before it breaks down, smears, and then slowly disapates :confused2:
SO SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS, and think of all the places I can't even see and my girl was clean washed once a weeek, wiped wiht quick detailers mist before and after every ride ARRRRRRRRRR

I use Liquid Performance Cleaner. Superb! Aside from the awkward positions you have to get your body into to clean the rims, the stuff works like a gem.
I live in CA (Southern) and they have taken the Honda cleaner off the market due to emissions control B F’ing S. We are allowed to drive Hummers and fat assed SUV's that get less than 10mpg, but heavens forbid we use an aerosol cleaner. Tosser law makers with their double standards.

I've used Honda Cleaner and Polish, WD-40, Brake Cleaner, Windex, and Simple Green. I'd have to say I like the Simple Green best because it cleans faster, wipes up easier and is cheaper/easier to buy (any store VS Honda dealer). I liked the Windex next, but I think you have to keep really on top of it for this to work. I wipe my rims almost after every ride. Honda polish 3rd, brake cleaner 4th (great if you really let your rims go), and WD-40 last. I really don't use WD-40 that much anymore for anything.
The Honda dealer was out of stock pads, so I got the HH. Do they really dust bad? If so I might return the pads...
I have some Orange come off almost no matter what I use....all of the above have resulted in some Orange at times on the towel.
At $4.00 a gallon, you'll never find me cleaning *ANYTHING* with gas. I envision newpaper articles with people cleaning loaded rifles with gasoline around a campfire anytime I think of someone using gas to clean....it probably seemed like a good idea until *BOOM*!!

YES the HH pads cause more dust but they are so much safer to stop with

Looks great HP, +1 on grinding off the brake bracket, Love the brake lines, I am hoping that Donna will get me SS lines for x-mas.
One problem though You washed it so hard that it put chicken strips back on the tire again............LOL:evilgrin:
I think I will leave the bracket for now :confused2: I want to get some info on a racing lighter reinforced subframe and may just want to keep this one stock as an unmodified part......

HP, now you have to invest the time and remove those rear reflectors and grind the left over rear brake reservior brackets. While your at it remove the warning devices under the foot pegs, LOL, for the low turns.
"Attention to details."
She looks great.
DONE, DONE , & DONE I did forget the reflectors but the michelin man on my rear tire looks like he got in a scrap, the rear sets HELLA better for lean angles, and the resi bracket stays for now
