View Full Version : Throttle glitch

ok, I may be looking to hard into this but i noticed when i am cruising about 80mph in 6th gear, rpm's are between 5800 and 6000, the bike feels like there is a flat spot in the throttle. it feels like it will slug for an instant then lurch forward as if i gave it gas when in actuality i have kept the throttle in the same position.
could this be an ecu glitch or throttle position problem? I am not sure if these bikes have a TPS or not.
i actually notice it in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th at the same throttle point and rpm. i am usually on the freeway doing 80 so i notice it more at that speed and rpm. If i am cruising through town and take off from a red light, i will slowly roll on the throttle to get to that rpm, it happens when the throttle is barely open.
it is kind of like a stumble or as if i am opening and closing the throttle real quick.
any info would be greatly appreciated as i dont want to take it to the dealer and have them tell me that there isn't anything and then get charged for them looking at it. I have a 5 year warranty but I am not sure if they would charge me because they couldn't find anything wrong with it.

I have not noticed that on mine, but i will try tonight and see if i do. I do notice the slug until i hit 2500-3000 RPM's and thenn the bike wants to take off, but from what i hear that is normal and a custom map usually will fix that issue and smooth the entire curve out. I am going to have a custom map done pretty soon (soon as the wife lets me :D ) and i will post it up.

I was wondering that also, do you have to get a piggy back ecu to do a custom map or are these ecu's tunable?
i am sure i could cure the problem with a custom tune but if it is a tps problem then the glitch would remain.

I use a power commander for my fuel mapping and i am not sure if the stock ecu is tuneable? Anyone know the answer to that one?

Stock ecu settings cannot be changed. If you install a HRC ecu and purchase the software and cable (extra $375) then you can completely program it to suit your needs. You would also need someone with some experience but the cool thing is you can even program the hesd. Problems? No provision for radiator fan so you have to wire it to a switch, no provision for side stand switch and you have to disconnect your clutch lever sensor also. Rev limiter is also higher so on the earlier models you have to do valve springs, on the 06/07 you can get away with stock ones but I do springs on them also.
It sounds like you're running a stock bike. They got a couple of spots on the powercurve that are not too "friendly". Even with stock exhaust, a pc3 will help you with driveability as long as it's tuned properly. Then if you decide to do a slip on or full system down the road, you already have the hardware, you will just need to get it mapped again. And yes, these bikes do have a tps. Check out www.powercommander.com for more info.

That's what i was gonna say ;)

thanks a million. i dont want to do much but upgrade exhaust and get a power commander. so maybe that will fix the problem with drivability.
it's not a real bad glitch, it is just annoying because the speed i typically ride at is where the glitch is so i either have to slow down or speed up.
i want to get ready for a track day in may and i want the bike to be as smooth as possible with the throttle.
time to look into a power commander.
thanks again guys, you have been a big help.

My RC51 was terrible around town, very lurchy at lower RPMs. I ended up regearing the bike a bit and it took care of some of the problem because I the RPMs changed a bit at 30-35 mph.
But you are right, bike really wakes up at around 2800 RPMs.

i was paying closer attention to it on the way home yesterday and then again coming n to work this morning.
it happens at 5000rpm and 80mph. if i cruise at 90mph and 6000rpm then the bike is perfect.
there just seems to be a flat spot right at 5000rpm and it really seems like a glitch in the tuning or in the tps.
do you think a dealer would charge me to look at it even though it is under warranty?
i figure if they couldn't find anything then they would have me pay for some sort of maintenace thing so they at least get some kind of money.

It rained here last night so i could not try. I will tonight and i will let you know what mine does.

This is cured with PC3, Flapper mod, and exhaust. The flapper is not coming into play at this rpm, but to get a really smooth curve I would do all 3 at same time. What you are feeling now is the flat spot before secondary injectors kick in.
