Check the manufacture date on the tires when you get 'em. The last set of tires I bought for my car on eBay ended up being several years old. I buy from TireRack.com now (automotive)...

Mine were 'new' too. New as in never used. But they were over 3 years old. This was automotive tires, but I'm just throwing it out there so you think about it.

all the motorcycle tires ive seen are coated in this slimy oily stuff so they can sit on a shelf for a long time and not dry rot

I just received a set of Pilot Race for my '07, from a seller on "the bay", and they are perfectly fine. They feel like gum-balls compared to the plain Pilot Power though.....see what kind of wear I get from them.
