The main reason I can think of is that it's an easy source for a thief to locate your house.

Might be a bit paranoid, don't you think? We drive $11K bikes, its not like we are hiding Ferraris in our garage. That’s like people who tape over their license plate before they post a pic of their bike. Like seeing a license plate is a big deal considering every time you ride it or park it somewhere 1000's of people see it.
So put the marker somewhere at a major intersection in your area or something, or better yet, make the map inaccessible to non-forum members.

I'm with Mean Machine. Anyone who sees you out riding could follow you home and find out where your bike is parked. Unless you're Bruce Wayne and don't want to give away the secret entrance to the bat cave, I don't see what the big deal is.

Don't throw me under the bus just yet... I was just offering one possible answer to the T/S's question. ;)
I own a Fox-body Mustang coupe and live in Dallas/Fort Worth. Take a visit to www.dfwstangs.com some time and check out all the "MY CAR WAS STOLEN" threads on the site. I would not be surprised one bit to find thieves trolling forums looking for nice cars/bikes in their area.
But I do agree, all someone has to do is follow you home or get your license plate.

Well, at least you have to be a registered member here to see the map. So someone would at least need to take a little extra effort in order to dig up some info. Also, non members can not even see the "Member Map" option in the navigation bar, they would have to find the information in the forums to even know that it existed.

Dear God, are you really trying to tell me that someone used the small US map to pinpoint locate a Mustang to steal? I seriously doubt it. I put my marker in, and it is as close to San Antonio as I could get. If you think you will be able to find me based on that map, then great. But most likely you will see one of the other half-dozen or so Repsols that I see all the time.
If my Repsol is worth your life, then go ahead and take your chances in stealing it. Just hope I don't catch you, as Texas recently passed the Castle Doctrine, so lethal force is allowed to defend one's self, family and property without fear of criminal or civil lawsuits. Or, to put it simply, "Don't Mess With Texas!"
We are a very friendly state...just don't try to steal our stuff!

Wow. What a friendly first post.
I assume your comments are directed at me, since I posted about Mustangs being stolen. And yes, I'm completely serious. On the forum I mentioned, people routinely post info about their cars - lots of these people have invested tens of thousands of dollars into their cars. If you think for one minute that a thief is above trolling certain forums and trying to figure out where to go to steal one of these cars and part it out, then I say you're full of it.
And regarding the map, look at it for a few more minutes and you might figure out that you can zoom in as far as you want. Even far enough in to locate your little pin directly on your driveway.
I obviously live in Texas, and you know as well as I do that the new Castle Doctrine will not stop auto (or motorcycle) theft. So go on being e-macho all you want, your Repsol is not protected any more because of it.
This thread was already beat to death and my comments are given in my posts above, but I figured I'd post up just to entertain you.
Cheers.

Well, if you are dumb enough to put the pin in your driveway, then maybe you should be worried about thieves. But I and I would suspect most of the folks on here put it in a general vicinity of where we live. I would be more worried about people tracking me home or reconnoitering my house before I would worry about someone who went to the exact location of my pin in anticipation of stealing my Repsol. And I never said thieves would be above using the Internet to locate cars or motorcycles to steal, I just figured if everyone used a bit of common sense they wouldn’t have to worry about this as an issue.
And I will have to disagree with your comments on Castle Doctrine, if you believe that increasing a homeowner’s right to property protection isn’t a deterrent, then that’s your right. And I am sure there are a lot of stupid thieves who get shot because they believe the same thing. But in a sense you are correct, because even before Castle Doctrine I was not about to allow some thieving bastard to try and steal my property, and I would use every resource at my disposal to prevent him from doing so. Not e-macho at all, pure reality.
We all live with some level of paranoia…hell, I drive around in an open Jeep and park it in public all the time. The level of exposure is even greater than that of a motorcycle, as with a full-faced helmet on at least you have some sense of concealment. And as I work on a US military installation, I cannot carry a personal firearm when I go onto base, hence I have to drive through some not-so-nice neighborhoods with little to protect myself. But maybe after nearly 25 years in the military I developed a sense of situational awareness that gives me a little warning to avoid dangerous encounters. So far it has worked.
Do whatever you feel you need to do to protect your property. If that means not putting your pin in your driveway or Photoshopping your tag out of any pictures you post, by all means do so. But I think there are more logical measures to protect your valued motorcycle, Mustang or other property. You do what you think is appropriate, and I will do what I think I need to; but just because your opinion differs from mine doesn’t make you more correct than me. You posted what you thought, and I posted what I thought. You felt a risk to your e–machismo so you responded, and now I am doing the same. Fair enough…
And how’s that for a second post?

LOL - no hard feelings on my end. I worried when typing my response that it would come across a bit brash, but didn't intend it that way.
I for one am not really one of those paranoid people. As I stated above, my original response about thieves trolling the site was simply one response to the threadstarters question.
If you do a little research, you'll find that the map idea was generated by none other than myself. Not trying to take credit or anything like that, just stating that I wouldn't really mention the map if it were something I was paranoid about.
I'm putting Lo-Jack on the bike this month, and other than that all I can really do is keep it in the garage at night and hope for the best.
And that was a good second post... :D

None here either. We were just discussing two differing viewpoints on the subject. If it weren't for a little spice, this thread would have gotten
And I didn't realize you could pinpoint your location so closely on that map. My first pin was on a golf course in SE San Antonio. As I said, I have geo-located it with much more precision, but to the Alamo. Anyone who wants to meet up can meet me there, it is easy to find. Or we can meet in Helotes, on the edge of the Texas Hill Country.
By the way, although my street is shown, the imagery doesn't show our house. It is less than two-years old, so all the thieves think is there is a clump of scrub oaks! Maybe they think the bike is parked underneath them! :confused2:

You are "lucky," as the satellite doesn't even show my house as existing, and it two years old. All it shows is the street, and none of the houses on it. Just vacant lots.
Now Maps.live shows our house with the minivan in front in three of the four angles (click on the compass corners--N, E, S, W--to change the view), and in the fourth it shows my car in the driveway. I believe some of those pictures were taken before Christmas 2005, as you can see my neighbor;s wreath over his garage. I also used that web site to show a water leak that was down the road from us, it showed up perfectly on the imagery!

Just chatting with HH and came up with an idea...
How about a separate map where we can post things like: Great roads to ride, great tracks, cool bike hangouts, etc.
Each pin could have an area for a brief description of the venue being posted...
Sounds brilliant to me - good idea HH!

Well, there were a few problems...
First, for some reason I had it setup so that all additions had to approved. I removed that restriction so pins are no added upon creation.
Second, if someone puts an illegal character in the image or text field, it screws up the whole thing and no pins are shown.
It is a problem with the plug-in, and I will see if they have a fix, but for now I'll have to monitor it more closely.
