Dont know if this happens with others, when I try shifting from neutral to 1st it makes a bad grinding noise sometimes especially when stationary. Anything I can do to get rid of it?

Start by checking the chain is tensioned correctly. This is the main reason 1st gear selection can be notchy or noisy.
Make sure you're fully disengaging the clutch, and that the clutch is functioning correctly, ie...there is no clutch "drag". Check with the lever fully engaged, and on a race stand. Also, when engaging 1st, don't try to finesse the selection. It should be firm and quick...but don't overdo it either.
Hope this helps.

Colin.

Pull in the clutch? :D

I'm on my third big Honda sport bike (900, 929, 1k), and all three of them have grinded in first and second gear. Even my dirt bikes all grinded in the first two gears occasionally.

Not very often, but it's definitely not limited to your bike. I ride with a lot of guys and listen to other people's bikes. All of the bikes "grind" occasionally.

I am guaranteed a grind if I'm downshifting into second and drop one too many into neutral. Going up into second or down into first always nets me a nice crunchy grind, unless I slow to a crawl and gently ease it into gear which is not usually possible due to traffic.

Haing said all that, I can't really say I've ever heard of a "fix" for the problem.
