Well I just past 600 miles and can't do the service right now so I want to at least change the oil. The manual says to remove the fairing but i'm afraid of breaking clips. Does anyone have any tips, don't do's, pictures or videos?

btw: the mechanic told me not to use synthetic yet. when did you guys switch? He said wait till 4k or 8k miles which I think is silly since on my Mazda I would switch right after break in (500mi). :confused2:

Oh what oil are you guys using? I got some repsol dyno and k&N filter.

Yeah, I don't know. I thought it was a good shop since they do all the bikes for the CHP. He mentioned about it not being good for the clutch but the manual says that's molyblenum (can't pronounce it) addative stuff. I didn't see that listed on the Repsol bottle. I tried to find a US Repsol rep but didn't see any on their site and they are located in Argentina. My spanish is not that good. I bought the dyno 15-50w Repsol oil for the change tomorrow and I will change it again at 1k miles.

Any tips on changing it? I really don't want to break anything.

I too struggled removing the clips when I put all the decals. There is a simple way, which I learnt after removing most of them. Instead of trying to pry them out, unscrew them with a Phillips screwdriver and the whole clip comes out easily. Once I started unscrewing it, removing the fairing was a cakewalk. I had no experience with these clips before. Have all the right tools(oil filter wrench) before you dive into the job. A powered one makes life easier. Goodluck.

^ thanks I tried a screwdriver for the black pop in clips but that didn't work for me. I had to use a small flat head screwdriver.

So I got the alen head bolts out of the side and the pop out clips underneath but there is "one" something still holding it on the center of the side under the round case cover. I am too scared to break the plastic. Does anyone know what the last clip is? I tried going up, down, left, right but i'm afraid of pulling on it. :(

There's a page in the owners manual that shows the location of the fasteners...

ok, I figured it out. The NGK sticker was covering the whole for the center alen head bolt. I sliced in to it and folded it down int he hole.

I tried to use my cair oil pan and wedged it underneath but since it came out with force it went over the lip and all over the floor, D'oh!

I will be investing in a wheel stand. It is possible to use a large tupperware bowl though, just adds to more things that needs to be cleaned. If you don't have a flat oil pan to pour it in to then I don't recomend a funnel unless you have a second person holding it.

Dang I was 1 quart low! It took the entire 4l bottle. Oh, removing the filter was rediculas. I have a wrench but it kept slipping. I eventually broke it loose and replaced it with K&N which easily tightens with a 12mm wrench.

The mechanic did say you can leave the top alen heads on, so you don't have to completely remove the side but doing it on the floor I prefer to remove it.

one tip....if you purchased your bike from the dealer brand new....take it there for the first service 600 mile check up. just in case something goes wrong with your bike......dealer has records of the first service....so your warranty will not be void.

it is good to use synthetic blend after the 1000 miles.

i have about 10,303 miles on mine.....i change the oil/ filer every 1500-2000 miles with synthetic motul. i use this oil on both my bikes.

there is another thread about what best oil to use......going by some threads here....REPSOL IT IS THE BEST after some tests done. but the oil is also little pricey.

There is a ton of scientific research that says you're wasting a lot of money changing your oil that frequently. I used to do the same, but with oil technology having made so much progress in recent years, it's a big waste of money. Especially with the synthetic (expensive) oil that's made to last even longer than conventional oil.

i agree with you on that.....the oil will last longer. but that does not mean that the oil is running cleaner. i do change my oil every 18-2000 miles....because i really ride my bikes hard, every weekend or chance i get.

Hello, I got here a little late but first you are ok with Synthetics at that milage.I build race engines and they take the synthetic after only 200 miles and everything works fine(mind you the tolerances are different). Just make sure that it is Motorcyle oil ALWAYS because is engineered for the clutch, gearbox, and engine protection etc.
I speak Argentinian if you need translation.
There are many motorcycle oils and many test have been done, you can check that in some articles in the sport rider mag or RRworld.
The other member gave you a great advice, keep it clean , because the oil offers you more protection being synth. is still going to get dirty from combustion, temperature changes, moisture absorption; 3000 miles oil change is good.
I hope that helps.
