Default 4 1gb sticks of ddr2 ram

So I don't have the money to really get a new computer right now and just trying to boost this old machine up a little it's a xps400 desktop 6 yrs old decent processor but right now only 526mb ram

If anyone has a few sticks in a dead comp or have some and make me a good deal on. I need yo get atleast 2gb but 4 is the max this comp will hold and only will take 1gb sticks for the four slots

Do you know what kind of MOBO you have? Some of those older boards won't take more than that.

Do you know what speed you need?

Frys(local shop) has great everyday deals.....and on Fridays they put out their weekly sales ad.
Here is a link for DDR2 desktop memory:
http://www.frys.com/search?query_str...&order_by=p03a

As you may know, unless youre running a 64-bit OS...you may not see the max of 4g ram...best I got was 3.5g, even though I have 4g in my laptop.

Here is a deal on a 2g stick:

Looks like you need DDR2 5300.... supposedly higher speed ram will clock down.
Id stick with the recommended speed unless you find a KILLER deal on the higher speed ram.

This stated on the Crucial website:
"How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS."

Hey Trey. Where are you located bro. I got you covered for at least 2-1gig sticks. Just cover shipping. As long as they are the right one's. They are your's. No way I'm letting you spend 40 bucks on 2 sticks of fibber glass. (With a little bit of science behind them. so what)

Five year old computer with a P4 probably will not run a 64 bit OS Might run Win7 32 bit ok. 32 bit will only address a maximum of 4GB of any memory, so if you have a video card with any memory associated with it that amount will be subtracted from your available ram. From what you have said so far, don't bother with any more than 3GB of ram. That will speed it up somewhat. Another important question is what size is your C:\ drive and if you right click on it see how much space is used. Hard drives that are over 50% full slooooooow way down. If you do the ram and a larger HDD you will notice a huge speed increase

80GB You will probably be able to just add two sticks of ddr2 667. Dells site shows your 'puter to have 512MB of ddr2 533. Make sure that you get two identical sticks (or dual channel) and if the ram slots are different colors, put the ram in the same colored slots. Also check ur user manual for specifics on dual channel ram. It should tell you which slots to install it in.

The hard drive should be fine....unless you store alot of video files...pics and mp3's dont take that much space.
What I do is store alot of my pics, music, video, etc. on an external drive....just in case I suffer a hard drive failure.
The 80g in my hard drive is pretty clean, just the OS and a few programs.
If I ever need my various files, all I do is grab it from the external.

If I were you, Id back up anything valuable on that desktop...wipe it clean...reinstall Windows...and bump up the ram to 2g(if you have to pay for it) or 3-4g(if you can get it donated to ya).
I try out alot of programs and then delete them, but remnants tend to stick around...So I wipe my machines clean every 6-12 months.

You will see a much quicker machine.
